How to Choose Fabric for your Brides Maid Dresses
Posted on
If you're reading this blog post and you're online looking for fabric for your attendants you are interesting in having a dress maker custom tailor your dresses. You, and your friends and family have looked at thousands of magazine pictures, browsed through hundreds of bridal websites and nobody can agree on that perfect dress. You have been to every bridal boutique in town with still no luck. Fortunately your bridal party has agreed on something .......... lets find a dressmaker ( or a generous & well skilled family member ) to make our dresses exactly the way we want.
Your first step is to secure your dressmaker. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time. You will need to select a dress style, order your fabric and trims, and schedule fittings.
Your fabric choice will determine the overall success of your dresses.
If you're looking for a flowing clinging dress your dressmaker will most likely need to cut the fabric on the bias which usually requires at least 58" wide fabric. Crepe Back Satin is one of the most popular fabrics for this type of dress. Make sure you select a Crepe Back Satin that has a good weight and a soft buttery hand. This is a reversible fabric and the satin side should have a nice smooth, even shiny luster. The crepe side should have a nice low luster slightly pebbled texture.
If you are looking for the popular "Fit & Flare" dress or the Traditional Ball Gown, a medium to heavy weight low luster poly satin would be perfect. Common trade name for this fabric is Peau de Soie or Duchess Satin.
